SATURDAY SPECIAL
Bored with the same old thing? Don't want to drive at night? Want to learn a new technique, medium or style? Want food? Then this is the meeting for you.

The first SATURDAY SPECIAL is Saturday, March 6th at 10 a.m. at Pat Brooks' home. This meeting features an art presentation, food and door prizes. Topic for this meeting is "Shadows-The Secret Light" with Quinten Gregory. Learn how professional scenery painters achieve the effects of sunlight in their paintings by using shadows. This 30 minute video is for all levels and useful for oil, acrylic and watercolor artists. We missed out on the mural painting creation video at our February meeting, so we will include this at this meeting as well.

Bring finger food to share with fellow members and come enjoy doing something a little special.

20th Annual Open Awards Show Update
Planning is already underway for the 20th Annual Open Awards Show July 13th-18th. It's really not that far away! The selection process for this year's judge is complete, with a pastel portrait artist from Grand Junction selected. More details in the next newsletter.

We do know that this year's show will again have the special non-juried exhibit, "Masters of Arts." For this display, members select a Master artist's work of art and attempt to reproduce that picture in any medium of choice. (Please select a famous, deceased artist's artwork. Image size is open and a photocopy of the work selected should accompany your work). The public will have the opportunity during the Open Awards Show to vote for their favorite with a People's Choice ribbon awarded to the winning "Masters" piece. Start painting now and be ready for this fun show.

ARA could use your help! Do you know someone who might be willing to be a business or individual sponsor for the Open Awards Show? All sponsor award monies (from $25 and up) are awarded to the artist and provide advertising for the business/individual. Help make this year's show special and ask someone today! For more information, contact an ARA officer.

PB&T Shows
"Then & Now" is currently on display at Pueblo Bank & Trust. It's a fun show and just the beginning of things to come at PB&T. In April, a new show, "Water, Water Everywhere," will be hung, welcoming in spring with artwork depicting water in some form. This one should be easy with so many rivers, lakes, etc. or maybe you have a creative twist to add???

Then in June the topic changes to something maybe a little more challenging with "Chaffee County ABCs." This show features scenes around our county that represent a letter of the alphabet. Confused? Pictures can include things like a stream in an "s" shape, or maybe trees that look like a letter of the alphabet, or a building with actual letters on it . . . start looking around and see all the "letters" around us. What can you come up with?

Susan Chermack is February's Artist of the Month
Susan is a freelance artist, designer, mural painter and calligrapher. As a certified oil painting instructor with the Robert Garden School of Art in Dallas, Susan teaches oil painting classes, where each student leaves with a finished painting. One of her greatest challenges and area of interest is her success in painting murals for the USAF Academy and the Olympic Training Center.

Each month will feature an ARA member artist. The featured "Artist of the Month" is designed to be a motivational challenge to create new pieces of work, as well as provide some local exposure. The artist of the month is selected on a volunteer basis.

We have a member artist for the next few months. However, if you are interested in being the featured artist for any month from August-November, please contact Andi.

Quote of the Month
Arts a staple. Like bread or wine or a warm coat in winter. Those who think it is a luxury have only a fragment of a mind. Mans spirit grows hungry for art in the same way his stomach growls for food&
